Visions, Decoded #03

In the silent showroom, all players of a hidden action coexist: the action of reading and making meaning as it is exercised by its provokers. Movement continues where talking stops and reception begins. The equilibrium of all views and visual information is exemplary: In a series of successive levels, Eleni Rimantonaki's lens is excavating the lost knowledge, which starts from simple viewing and results in a more complicated process. A lonely, isolated, process, as if it's taking place in prison.

However, the triple framing of the photographer does not isolate or entrench the photo's characters. It works to a degree of narrative, trying to lighten the coexistence of artistic creation and the mechanism of human reception. The artworks in the artwork itself reflect the multiple functions of the gaze, a gaze for the hanging works and a gaze, adopted by the girl who seems to spring from the paintings of Lautrec, in order to understand. And both these gazes can only occur at the most decisive moment.

Ursula-Helen Kassaveti (photo by Vivi Kaparou) was born in Athens in 1980. She holds a B.A. in Literature (University of Athens, Athens School of Philosophy), a M.A. in Cultural Studies (University of Athens, Department of Communication and Mass Media) and a Ph.D. in Film, Genre Theory and Sociology at the same department. Her research interests revolve around Popular Culture (film/music), Visual Ethnography, and Cultural Studies. She has been a post-doc researcher at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where she co-taught the undergraduate module “Social History of Mass Media” (2015) and is now a research fellow at University of Patras. She has made various announcements in international and Greek conferences and has published articles and a monography on film and media. She teaches “Discourse and Visual Analysis” and “Greek Film & Culture” at “Kostis Palamas” Longlife Education Program at the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens.
